Every Member in Ministry

At Maple Grove our mission is to "be an open community of Christians who love God and serve our neighbors" and one of our avenus to service is through our Every Member in Ministry (EMIM) model.  EMIM not only provides an opporutunity to serve but also an opportunity to connect and form relationships within our church family.  Maple Grove invites all members and friends of our congregation to come together to serve in a place of need and in a way most meaningful to them. 

Each year in October, during our annual Stewardship Campaign, a new EMIM booklet and commitment card becomes available. A ministry commitment is for 1 year of service. However, you may signup to serve on any ministry team year after year and you may also contact the church office to join a team at any time during the year. EMIM encourages you to prayerfully consider where God is calling you to serve. You are welcome to join any of the following ministry teams:

Administration & Communication

Audio/Visual Crew: Operate sound board during worship service (training provided). Assist with media in Sunday worship and special events. May include advance setup and presentation of slide shows or videos. Time commitment varies.

Bulletin Stuffer: Meet at church Friday morning to add inserts to Sunday bulletins. 1x/month – 1 hour or less

Library: Help care for church’s collection of books, videos, and other materials; assist with circulation. 4-6x/year – 30 minutes

Maple Leaf Assembly: Help assemble church newsletter and occasional mailings. 1x/month – 1-2 hours

Office Mailing: Either at the church or at home, stuff envelopes for church mailing. 4-8x/year – 1-4 hours

Office Volunteer: Assist church office staff as needed. 4-8x/year – 1-4 hours

Sunday Secretary: Assist persons visiting church office on Sunday mornings; answer office telephone; relay messages as needed. 4x/year – 1 ½ hours

Website: Develop and maintain our Internet presence (may include web design, content management, and/or incorporation of new technologies). Time commitment varies.

Wedding Coordinator: Provide rehearsal and wedding day support for pastor and wedding party. 2-4 weddings/year – 2-3 hours

Children & Youth

All Church Advent Fair Planning: Plan, organize and lead the annual All Church Advent Fair. 1X/year – 4 hours

Children’s Moments Leader: Share with congregation the Children’s Moments during second worship service on Sunday mornings. 1x/every 6-8 weeks – 5-10 minutes + preparation time

Children’s Worship Adult Leader: Lead portions of the children’s service, help children (age 4 – grade 5) worship God. 1x/every 6-8 weeks – 1 hour + preparation time

Project Sunday School Leader: Help lead children ages 4 through grade 5. 1x/every 4-6 weeks – 1 ½ hours + preparation time

Easter Egg Hunt Planning: Plan, organize and lead the annual Easter egg hunt for families. 1X/year – 6-8 hours

Little Lambs’ Nursery Helper: Assist staff nursery coordinator in providing loving care for infants and children 3 years old and younger. 1x/every 4-6 weeks – 1 ½ hours

Vacation Bible School Leader: Help children explore Bible stories through drama, music, crafts, puppets, games, snacks, dinners, and decorations. Approximately 3 hours per evening (commitments vary with interest area)

Youth Fundraising: Help plan and direct the fundraising efforts for the youth mission trip. Time commitment varies.

Youth Group Leader: Help with Sunday night Youth Group and/or special events for youth group throughout the year. These could be for fun (overnights, social outings, camping trips) or for service (local missions, church events).

Youth Sunday School Leader: Using Sunday School curriculum facilitate Bible study, discussion, and activities for youth Sunday school. 1X/per month – 1 ½ hours + preparation time

Church Building & Garden Care

Events Setup and Teardown: Help set up and tear down tables, chairs, and stage for church events. 2-4x/year – 1-2 hours each event

God's Gardeners: Care for church grounds and community garden by cleaning up, planting, weeding, and watering. 4x/year – 3 hours

Hanging of the Greens: Decorate church building and grounds for Advent; remove and store decorations after Christmas. 2x/year – 2 hours each

Kitchen Care: Meet quarterly to clean church kitchen facilities. Inform trustees of kitchen needs. 4x/year – 3 hours

Congregational Care

Altar Guild Flower Deliveries: Deliver altar flowers to hospitalized or homebound church members (and briefly visit if appropriate) following Sunday worship services. 6x/year – 1-2 hours

Angel Meal Preparation or Delivery: Prepare soup and cookies for delivery to recently hospitalized members or deliver the food to those recently discharged. 1-3 hours per month depending on the number of members hospitalized

Birthday Cards: Prepare birthday cards for church members; obtain signatures on cards from members and others. 1x/year – 2 hours

Blood Pressure: Health care professionals check blood pressure for Sunday attendees on the third Sunday of each month. 6x/year – approximately 30 minutes

Cancer Care: Provide one-on-one Christian caregiving to individuals being affected by cancer; work with the team to bring awareness and resources to the MG congregation. 12x/year – 1-3 hours

Funeral Meals: Prepare food, deliver to church, and help serve bereaved families at post-funeral meals. 6-10x/year – 1-2 hours

Homebound Visitation: Visit homebound Maple Grove members. 1 visit, call, or card per month

New Baby Meals: Help plan, prepare, and deliver meals for families with newborns. Approximately 2x/year – 2-3 hours

Over Eighty Luncheon Planning: Plan and prepare a lunch and entertainment for Maple Grove people over eighty years of age. Approximately 5 hours for one events

Prayer Chain: Lift up in prayer church members and others who are in need of God’s healing. Team members communicate by email or phone. Meet 6x/year – plus prayer time

Prayer Shawl: Knit or crochet shawls for those who are in need of feeling enfolded in God’s loving arms. Meet 1x/year – 1 hour, plus knitting time

Outreach

Friendly Patrol: Help ensure that Maple Grove is inviting to newcomers and reaching out to members. Whenever attending worship and other church events

Greeters – 1st or 2nd Service: Welcome worshippers on Sundayprior to the worship service. 4-6x/year – 20 minutes

Parish Visitors: Call on first-time visitors to take gift, provide information about Maple Grove, and encourage visitors to return. 5-7x/year – 30-90 minutes

Sunday Hospitality: Prepare coffee table and provide refreshments in lobby on Sunday mornings. 4x/year – 1 hour or less

Fellowship

All Church Advent Fair: Plan, organize and/or lead the annual Advent Fair. 1X/year – 4 hours

Spaghetti Dinner/Silent Auction Planning: Help plan, prepare, or serve dinner or set up and decorate Fellowship Hall for annual fund-raiser. Help plan for auction and set up parlor for auction to raise funds for grounds beautification. Time varies depending on task (planning begins in early January; spaghetti supper is in mid-February)

Toy Trains: Set up two displays per year, one at children’s concert and one in autumn. 3x/year (including planning meeting) – 5-10 hours for displays



Mission

Abused Children Outreach: Develop programs and reach out to abused children and their families through partnership with Nationwide Children’s Hospital. 3x/year – 2 hours

Bethlehem on Broad Street: Help assemble and deliver boxes of donated foods to Broad Street UMC. 1 Sunday in early December – 2 hours

Blessing of the Animals: Help coordinate and assist with service in which pets receive blessing. (Pet ownership not required.) 4-5 planning sessions – 1 hour; 2-hour event in spring

Bread of Life – Pickup & Delivery: On Tuesday evenings, pick up bread from Panera bakery near church and deliver to CRC.
1x/month – 1 hour

Community Vegetable Garden: Help with any of these needs of the Maple Grove vegetable garden at 49. W. Henderson Rd.; tilling, planting, weeding, harvesting or delivering the vegetables to the CRC or NNEMAP food pantries. May through October – as needed

CRC (Clintonville-Beechwold Community Resource Center) Breakfast: Prepare and serve breakfast on Sunday mornings for CRC clients. 2-4x/year (Sunday mornings) – 2-3 hours

CRC (Clintonville-Beechwold Community Resource Center) First Thursday Dinner: Prepare, serve and dine with guest for dinner at CRC. 6x/year – 2 hours

Feed My Sheep – Deliver Canned Goods: Deliver donated foods to CRC and NNEMAP. 8x/year (2nd or 4th Wednesday) – 1 hour

Feed My Sheep – Make Sandwiches: Make sandwiches for the homeless and the hungry. 1 or 2x/month as needed

Feed My Sheep – Deliver Sandwiches: Deliver prepared sandwiches to Faith on 8th Mission. 8x/year (1st or 3rd Monday) – 1 hour

Mission Trips and Disaster Response: Through Habitat for Humanity, UMCOR, and other organizations, Maple Grove adults participate in hands-on mission work. Typically on a week-long trip/retreat. Time commitment varies according to need.

New Life Servant: Sort clothing and straighten clothing room at New Life UMC. 1x/month (1st Wednesday) – 2 hours (12:30-2:30 pm)

NNEMAP (Near Northside Emergency Assistance Program): With other team members prepare a simple lunch and serve clients at the food pantry or assist clients accessing the food pantry. NNEMAP is located at 3rd Ave. and N. High St. 2x/year –2 hour

Pastor’s Pantry: Bag food items for brown bag lunches provided to the homeless through CRC. 1x/month – 1 hour

PAWS (Pets Are Working Saints): Activities focus on caring relationships between people and animals. May include training for visitations, visiting shut-ins, helping at animal shelters, collecting wish list items for shelters, etc. Pet ownership not required. Varies with activity

Thanksgiving Meal: Help set up, prepare, cook, serve, or clean up for the community Thanksgiving meal. 1x/year – 1-4 hours

Music, Drama & Visual Art

Chancel Choir: Sing in choir to provide musical leadership in worship services. 3 hours per week (rehearsal + Sunday worship) – September through May

Maple Grove Players: Perform dramatic sketches and readings for worship services, special events, and community outreach. Varies with performance schedule

NewSong: Small group to sing once a month in worship). Practice 1-2 hours per month

New Leaf Combo: Perform instrumental ensemble music (jazz, gospel, blues) for worship services, special events, and community outreach. 4-6 x/year, depending on performance schedule – 1-3 hours + rehearsal time

Photography: At request of church staff or ministry team, photograph new members and church activities. 1-4x/month – 15 minutes

Jullbelate Handbell Choir: Provide handbell music for one worship service per month.  1-2 hours per month, plus 1 ¼-hour weekly rehearsal – September – May

Worship

Altar Guild – Holiday Flowers: Arrange flowers in sanctuary, lobby and chapel for Christmas and Easter. 3-5x/year – 1-2 hours

Altar Guild – Paraments: Place appropriate paraments and wall hangings in sanctuary, chancel, and chapel according to church calendar. 6-8x/year – 1 hour or less

Communion Stewards: Prepare bread and juice for communion in worship; clean up after worship. 1x/month – 1 hour

Liturgist: Help lead worship service by reading scripture and other portions of the worship service as assigned. 4x/year – 1 hour

Pew Restocking: Clean out and restock literature and envelopes in pew pockets. 1x/month – 1 hour

Usher: Distribute bulletins and seat congregation at worship service; receive offering and serve communion. 1x/month – 1 ½ hours
